Dorothy M. Johnston, age 91 of Joplin, passed away at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2011 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage, from injuries sustained in the Joplin Tornado.

Born May 5, 1920 in Waco, Mo., she was the daughter of the late William Orville Lofton and Bessie Lee Bennett Lofton. She graduated from high school in Joplin and attended Joplin Business College. In 1956 she moved to Phoenix, Ariz., then to Yuma, and returned to the Joplin area 20 years ago. She retired as Vice President of Tanner Brothers, Inc., a road construction company, where she served as the first female board member. She was baptized at an early age at Waco Christian Church. Dorothy also enjoyed playing golf.

She was preceded in death by a brother, W.O. “Bill” Lofton; sisters, Virginia Hoyt, Elizabeth Hamilton and Thelma Scurlock.

Survivors include her sister, Betty Henry and husband Speck of Joplin; several nieces and nephews, including Dick Scurlock of Kansas City, Mo., Jane Brown of Joplin, Virginia Hoyt, Brent and Greg Henry of Joplin.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Ozark Memorial Park with Rev. Bob Simon officiating. The casket will remain closed. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

Mr. J.T. Strickland, age 85, of Joplin passed away Friday, July 8, 2011 at the Benchmark Health Care in Monett, from injuries sustained in the May 22nd Joplin tornado. Mr. Strickland was born on September 11, 1925 in Hoyt, OK.

Mr. Strickland served his country for 10 years in the U.S. Navy during WW II and the Korean War. He worked as a motel manager for many years. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church of Joplin.

He is survived by his wife Betty Strickland of the home, and a daughter Chrys Corcoran of Joplin, 5 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grand Children, and a sister Zula Dean Lake of Ocean Pines, Maryland.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 2 PM at the Bethany Presbyterian Church of Joplin.

Michael Wayne Dennis, age 52 of Galena, Kan., passed away at 11:57 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. John’s Medical Center in Springfield, from complications due to injuries he sustained in the May 22^nd Joplin tornado, while he was a patient at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin.

Born April, 7, 1959 in Parsons, Kan., he was the son of the late Wayne Dennis and Shirley Cowley Dennis and lived in the Columbus and Baxter Springs, Kan. areas most of his lifetime. Michael was disabled and never worked. He enjoyed comic books and PlayStation.

Survivors include his uncles and cousins.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. No public services are planned. Interment will be in Parsons, Kan. at a later date.
